This is how I’m spending New Years Eve. One of the first things I did when I got to my hotel room after a 14 hour duty was pull off the shoes and socks while at the same time taking off my tie. There’s a real knack for doing this without falling over and requires lots of practice. Anyway, the four of us were too pooped to go out so I ate some leftovers I brought along, took this silly self-portrait and then will probably be asleep by ten. We are back out again in the morning to do it all over again with new passengers and new adventures. Happy New Years to everyone and please be safe. See ya next year. Tweaked this one with Topaz Adjust.

Melissa
Look at those eyes! I met the lovely Melissa and her daughter, Riley, for coffee yesterday. Riley is visiting for he holidays so I needed to see her. I met this mother and daughter team a couple of years ago just after I moved out here. We’ve done hikes and dinners and taken a few photos together. I’ve posted image of Melissa before, like this one and this one. Later on we headed for lunch and proceeded to gorge ourselves with Chinese food, it was Riley’s choice so her fault. It’s always good for a single old man to have two beautiful young ladies sitting at the same table with him. 🙂
Update on my mother: Surgery went well, routine as the doctors called it. She will spend a couple days in ICU and may go home before the weekend is over. Now comes the slow process of healing. We hope she has the energy and strength to work through a smooth recovery.

A Book
One of the projects I assigned myself this past year was to create a book with some of my images as a Christmas present to give my children, my two sisters and my parents. I waited until November to finish it like a good procrastinator would do. But, it is done and everyone seemed to enjoy it. After finishing it I had one shipped to me then made a couple of edits to the final version. I used blurb after I purchased and reviewed a couple of books, one by Faye White and one by Graham. I was pleased with what I saw.
As with a lot of projects they seem to move in directions we do not expect. My intentions were to make a small book with 24 of my blog posts, wording on one page and the image on the opposite. However, I found myself gravitating towards some of my black and white images and giving them simple titles. Here is a link to the pdf preview if anyone wants to check it out. Again, any feedback is welcome.
PS: I just found out my mother will have triple by-pass surgery this morning at 8:00 am. Any form of prayer or thought would be appreciated. Thanks!

Last One for the Year
The last two days of holiday travel have not been good for those along the eastern coast. We have experienced snow from the southern states all the way up to the New England states. Needless to say my work has been more difficult and included longer work days. Yesterday was a 14 hour duty day. It will probably take a couple days to get things back to normal. And, by that I mean flight crews, aircraft and passengers where they were suppose to be.
I quickly found my hotel room last night and tucked my tired body under warm covers. Slept well. Slept late. Woke to sunshine, cold temperatures, snow on the ground and a stiff wind. I quickly voted against taking a walk and splurged on breakfast in the hotel restaurant. After consuming a Godfather omelet, I headed up to my room to iron my shirt and prepare for day four of this trip. Outside of the elevators I stopped to enjoy the Christmas tree before it comes down for the season. With the new year quickly approaching I got in one more Christmas photo, my last one for this year. I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and hope you have a wonderful week!

Looked like this…
I didn’t post an image yesterday because I haven’t been shooting much or writing or much of anything. With gay skies and cold wind I much preferred staying inside reading a book. Both yesterday and today looked like this. Hope everyone has their shopping done, a half gallon of egg nog in the fridge and cards on their way. And, please enjoy your evening!

Winter Solstice
The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. Depending on the Gregorian calendar, the December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23. On this date, all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south receive 24 hours of daylight. The sun is directly overhead on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere during the December solstice. It also marks the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours for those living south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Those living or travelling south from the Antarctic Circle towards the South Pole will see the midnight sun during this time of the year. On the contrary, for an observer in the northern hemisphere, the December solstice marks the day of the year with the least hours of daylight for those living north of the Tropic of Cancer. Those living or traveling north of the Arctic Circle towards the North Pole will not be able to see the sun during this time of the year.
But what makes today special is Madie’s birthday, my youngest granddaughter. This image is from the archives.
Happy Fourteenth Madie!
