    Still Heading West

    Freezing Rain

I’m bedding down tonight  just west of St. Louis at small place called Foristell, MO. I left Columbus early this morning and got in about 9 hours of weaving around semi’s along I70 before the weather became a problem. The first 4 hours I was enjoying clear blue skies then things began to change. I decided it was time to stop and get a hotel when the slick-as-snot freezing rain was building up on my wipers and making visibility almost impossible. I stopped twice to clean them off. The bad news is it’s suppose to turn to snow later and continue on throughout tomorrow. I may be here a while and still have about 850 miles to go. The above image is the grill of the car parked next to mine when I checked in. Needless to say, my car looked the same. What amazes me are the vehicles still on the road. Of course I will admit those going west are probably commuting home while those going east are trying to keep ahead of the weather.

After checking in to the room I “skated” next door to the truck stop and scarfed down some cajun grilled catfish, the perfect truckers meal. Now I’m stuffed. I have a clean bed, warm room and will soak in a hot tub of water before slipping between the sheets to read. Hopefully, tomorrow I can safely keep moving west, closer to home. 🙂

    One More of Dianne

    Dianne

The previous image of Dianne and this one are the two keepers I got from 16 images, all taken in about 5 minutes. We had just stepped off the elevator at our hotel when I saw the window light and asked her to let me take some shots. I really try not to infringe on any of my crew members but this was one of those times when I was excited about the light. I also wanted the session to be short as we had just finished eating BBQ and both of us needed quiet time after several hours of noise.

Today is packing day and cleaning up the apartment. Hope to leave in the morning for my drive back to Colorado. Hope everyone has a great week!

    Window Light

    Dianne

Portraits are tough for me. I feel confident in my technical skills but feel some weakness in capturing the essence or personality of the person. How many good images I get will depend on the relationship established between myself and the model. The more comfortable that relationship the better the chances for good images. In this short session with Dianne I asked her to find a comfortable pose, hold it while I take an image then move on to another pose. She did very well, I enjoyed working with her, and I believe a couple more short sessions would offer more keepers.

I also enjoyed the diffused window light from our overcast skies, cold and wintery. This window light is soft, delicate, creating minimal shadows with warm tones. But, in all honesty, what really makes this a nice portrait is the beautiful young lady! Thank you, Dianne!

    Learning to See

    Arapahoe Nature Area

“You learn to see by practice. It’s just like playing tennis, you get better the more you play. The more you look around at things, the more you see. The more you photograph, the more you realize what can be photographed and what can’t be photographed. You just have to keep doing it.” – Eliot Porter

I did a bit of fly fishing a few years ago. A newbie needs to learn the mechanics of casting so the fist step is to practice casting with a fly rod in the backyard: the 2:00 o’clock, 10 o’clock thing. Lot’s of practice. But once on the river we became aware of the difference of mastering the mechanics and seeing the fly land delicately on the water then drift to the spot we want. A good fly fisherman will visually follow the fly, watching to see the trout rise and take the fly. This takes more practice, lots more practice.  We must learn to see the fish take the fly or we will miss opportunities. A veteran will see those fish rise and take home his limit.

Since picking up a camera back in 2003, practice has become an everyday experience. Each time I pull the camera out of the bag, hold it in my hand, press the shutter, it is practice. As we practice the mechanics become second nature and allows the scenes to be seen. Earl asked me a question about the lighting in one of my images a couple days ago. In answering his question, I realized I no longer am taking snapshots but learning to see images.

I’m back in the air again today, starting a 4-day trip. This will be my last trip out of Columbus as I start flying out of Denver in February. Packing is basically done. All I have to do is put it in the car and hit the road. Later.

    Tom

    Tom

I would like to introduce you to one of those people who has a contagious smile: Tom. His Greek heritage may have something to do with that smile. He is always joyful, enjoying life, and thus the smile. He travels along in this life at a slower pace than most of this western culture. However, he does quicken the pace when he steps on a soccer field with his league, one of his passions. He is not controlled by a cellphone or computer since he does not own either one. He loves people and the conversations that can be shared and therefore never knows a stranger. He likes Greek food (chicken lemon soup) and his ouzo. He has this ability (actually it’s more an obsession) to sense when any beautiful woman is nearby. And, then his smile gets bigger! 🙂

    Don’t Ask …

    A Cold January Afternoon

… me what I was doing out in Blendon Woods Park Yesterday afternoon when the temperature never rose above 20 degrees. I suspect it could have been a case of stir-crazy or insanity. Anyway, I took a short walk, long enough to get my hands and  feet cold and my heart rate up. However, I did like one image I took facing the late afternoon sun using a large aperture for the starburst effect.

I have more packing to do today then ship a couple of boxes back to Colorado. The less I have in the car the easier it will be on me.

    The King and Queen

    The King and Queen

The temperature this morning in Columbus was -1 degrees and 5:20 am and it is only suppose to reach 20 degrees today. That’s way too cold for this old guy who would much prefer a mocha latte next to a warm fire or maybe a tropical beach. Todays image of the King and Queen, is from a few years ago at a renaissance festival in Larkspur, Colorado. If you’ve never been to one of these events, your missing some  wonderful photo opportunities. You will find smiling faces, people of all sizes and shapes and color, jesters, food, games, entertainment, gift shops, music. What amazed me the most was all the costumes. They were vibrant with colors and works of art themselves. Then when you wrap the costume around a vibrant smiling person we have a great photo. And, let me tell you, it was warmer than today!
