    A Wet Snow

After the Snow in the Meadow

Late Monday afternoon the 30% chance of rain turned into great big beautiful snowflakes, dumping about 2 inches in Fort Collins. So much for weather forecast accuracy. It continued throughout the night then showed us blue skies by noon. In my eyes those big wet snowflakes make it a gorgeous snowfall. By 9:00 am I was excitedly heading to the Environmental Learning Center. I wanted to walk the trails and see the beauty nature was presenting. A wet snow like this one must be felt and experienced up close.

    Wet Snow on Branches

With no wind during the night the wet snow piled up on the tree branches and those few solitary leaves still hanging on the branches. First one snowflake falls on a branch quickly followed by another, clinging tightly to each other. Each unique snowflake when combined with each other is natures work of art. I love it.

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
    And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white. Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm-tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

    The Sun is Breaking Through

Quiet. The crunching of snow under my boots would break the silence. The winding trail leads me through one meadow and then takes me through the overhanging branches of trees and on to the next meadow and more trees. My eyes are searching this almost all black and white scene. I’m looking, open for anything. A prayer resonates deep within me. I feel a peace. Gentle breezes blow snow off the branches creating a quiet snowfall and blanketing me in white. Now I smile. Love it.

    Poudre River

“The snowfall is so silent, so slow, bit by bit, with delicacy it settles down on the earth and covers over the fields. The silent snow comes down white and weightless; snowfall makes no noise, falls as forgetting falls, flake after flake. It covers the fields gently while frost attacks them with its sudden flashes of white; covers everything with its pure and silent covering; not one thing on the ground anywhere escapes it. And wherever it falls it stays, content and gay, for snow does not slip off as rain does, but it stays and sinks in. The flakes are skyflowers, pale lilies from the clouds, that wither on earth. They come down blossoming but then so quickly they are gone; they bloom only on the peak, above the mountains, and make the earth feel heavier when they die inside. Snow, delicate snow, that falls with such lightness on the head, on the feelings, come and cover over the sadness that lies always in my reason.”

    While it snows….

Writing, Reading and a Chai Latte

… outside I find it relaxing to sit in some coffee shop with a warm fire and write, read and sip on a chai latte. I find the above image much more comfortable and warmer than standing in a snow storm to find an image. This was taken a couple weeks ago. Today I am in my yearly recurrent class to make sure I’m qualified to continue to work. My heart is sure not into it this year.

    Quiet Snowfall

    Quiet Snowfall

A quiet winter snowfall is quiet for a couple of reasons. First snow does not reflect sound well, it absorbs it so that much of what you would normally hear is muffled. The pores in the snow cover are responsible for the quiet conditions. When acoustic waves travel horizontally above the snow, the increased pressure of the wave momentarily pushes some air into the pores. This air returns to the atmosphere after the wave passes, but some energy has been lost from friction and thermal effects. Over a short distance, this mechanism can significantly reduce the sound energy in the acoustic wave. Secondly, most animals seek shelter when it snows and therefore there are many less bird sounds immediately after a snow storm. I guess you could include a third reason, most people stay inside when it snows.

    It’s the Light

Statue of Virgin Mary at Blessed John the 23rd Church

“No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door: the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people’s eyes, to reveal the marvels around.” ― Paulo Coelho

Having my daughter and two of my grandchildren living with me I find quiet time hard to come by. To solve that problem, and since it is the Lenten season, I’ve started going to a couple of churches nearby. One is a Catholic church called John the 23rd and within walking distance. Just behind the alter are two large figurines, one of Joseph and one of Mary. The late afternoon light was gorgeous as it beamed down on the statue of Mary. I hesitated to move forward and take a photo because I did not want to disturb those who were praying nor did I want to show any disrespect. But, that light was calling up black and white visions in my head so I walked forward to the altar, bowed in reverence, then walked around the statue, taking several images. The light was awesome. The moment was awesome. Moving. Once those images were given to me I knelt down with gratitude and enjoyed more quiet time: prayer, meditation and contemplation.

    Frost Crystals

    Frost on the Car Window

Had an interesting conversation with my grandson yesterday morning. We had a beautiful frost overnight leaving these large crystals all over the car. I told him to check them out as they were just gorgeous. He looked then stated he thought I was the only one who would notice something like that. He may be close as there may not bee that many people who look at frost as I do. It could be my age is giving me more respect for the constant art of nature. Or it could be walking around with a camera in my hand has helped me to pay more attention to our world.
