I made a last minute decision to go watch and photograph the Super Blue Moon last night. Surprised to see all the traffic up around Pineridge and Horsetooth as people showed up to watch the moonrise. I was aware of how disinterested I was in witnessing this event. I was more interested in photographing it, yet only took six images then made my way home. Shot at 300mm, 1/10th second, f5.6 and iso of 400. In case you don’t know the Super Blue Moon is the convergence of three lunar occurrences – a full Moon, a Supermoon, and a blue Moon. A blue Moon is the term used for when we see the full Moon twice in a month. This is not the best image but considering the moon is over 222,000 miles away and orbiting at 2,228 miles per hour it’s okay for my standards.

Life Moves On
“There was never a dawn, regardless how beautiful or promising, that did not grow into noontime. There was never a noon that did not fall into afternoon. There was never an afternoon that did not fade toward evening. There never was a day yet that did not get buried in the graveyard of the night.”

Even though I’d forgotten
Last Friday evening was to be a full moon. I forgot. But things worked out for me anyway. Friday was a day filled with clear blue skies, nary a cloud to be seen and hot. Even with that in mind I jumped in the car to drive out east on some country dirt road for some quiet and open space. I spent a good hour taking everything in, refreshing my soul, as they say. Without clouds to reflect the sun there was no red sky.
I started home around 8:30 pm, after the sun had dropped behind the Rocky Mountain horizon. My route home was to drive south south on County Road 13. Just as I crested the ridge about a quarter mile down the road, I was greeted with a gorgeous view of the rising full moon in the east. I raced ahead and stopped at a couple of places where I figured I could get a decent photo. I have one decent image but, stopping, turning off the engine and taking it all in was what I needed. I was given a wonderful gift for a short period of time, even though I’d forgotten it was to be full moon.

Colorado Moonrise “The Super Moon”
Here is my attempt at the “super moon” from last night. It is just rising above the small country town of Watkins, Colorado.

Wide Open Spaces
“Those who find beauty in a landscape do so because it touches a place of beauty already within themselves.” – Courtney Milne
I find I’m in this phase of looking for those wide open spaces. It may be because of the amount of solitude I’ve been taking over the past few years and reflecting where I am in my personal life. It may also be do to the time spent in the Ohio Valley where wide open spaces were not as prevalent. It may be because of my fascination with clouds. Whatever, here are two more from the eastern prairie, taken the same evening about an hour apart. I apologize if I’m posting too many of these landscapes and I’m giving you fair warning more are coming. 🙂
