    Silence Within

    Solitude at Sunset
    Solitude at Sunset

I go to this area on regular basis because it’s only about 5-6 miles from my home. Until last night I never paid any attention to this tree. Just to to right of of the image are a group of trees I photograph on a regular basis but not this one. I don’t even remember seeing it before. Anyway it is now on my list of subjects to look for.

Silence has become an essential part of my life. It’s not just a time to sit and have external quiet. Finding inner quiet has been a process over the past 20 years or so. I found it useful when I worked as a fight attendant. When flying I discovered how to find places of silence. After the chaotic boarding process we would begin pushing away from the gate and begin our taxi to the runway. It’s at this point we take our jump-seats and as we are trained, make a silent review. This silent review entails a walk through our minds all steps we would take in case of an emergency during takeoff. After a silent review I would also use this time to quiet my inner self. This included deep breaths to help silence the mind. There was no silence in that aircraft but I could find the silence within me.

    Connection to the natural world

Cloudy afternoon at Cathy Fromme Prairie Area
Cloudy afternoon at Cathy Fromme Prairie Area

I needed more time away from the bustle of the city so drove out to the Cathy Fromme Prairie Area for a walk. This short grass prairie was established because of the large prairie dog community and the support it provided for coyotes, raptors and rattlesnakes. This area has never seen a plow so it remains in a pre-settlement state. They built a nice covered observatory allowing visitors to see hawks and eagles. The birds are amazing with my favorite being the Western Meadowlark and its song. A sad part was the city deciding to poison off the prairie dog community due to disease. Never the less its always a place to find a connection to the natural world for me.

    Sunset on Horsetooth

I had about a half hour of free time before meeting friends on Monday night. Felt the need for some quiet time closer to nature so I stopped at an overlook area above Rowland Moore Park. The sun was about to set and dark heavy clouds were constantly reshaping themselves above me. The glow of the sun was illuminating the clouds edge just above Horsetooth Rock. I needed this short time of quiet watching my nature channel in nature. 🙂

    Trees at Sunset
    Trees at Sunset

This was taken 5 years ago and is a pair of favorite trees I visited a lot. I have not been there for quite some time and wonder how they would look now. Good grief, we are less than a week away from Christmas.  It is coming up too fast. I noticed we are expecting to have a bit of cooler weather for Christmas. They say snow Thursday through Saturday then single digit temperatures at night for the next 5 days. Brrr!

Storm Clouds Along the Colorado Front Range
Storm Clouds Along the Colorado Front Range

We have had cloudy and cooler weather for the past few days, seeing less of our Colorado sunshine. This past Saturday was a day for lovely clouds and not just a gray sky. I have taken several images from this location and always include the trees.

Sunset at Lake Ramona in Red Feathers Lake

Red Feather Lakes comprises the village which has three small general stores, an Ace hardware store, an outdoor sports shop, a community library, small antique store, and post office. There are several rustic mountain restaurants in the community. It also has several small lakes in close proximity of Red Feather Lakes Village.Dowdy Lake, Parvin Lake, West Lake, and Lake Bellaire are open to the public and maintained by Colorado State Wildlife Areas. There are eight private lakes within the Village that require a membership to access.

I stayed with my friend Don at his rustic cabin. He has had this cabin for the past 16 years and uses it for a sanctuary to get away from the busyness of the city. On Wednesday evening we drove to a couple lakes for any opportunities for sunset reflections in the lakes. Overcast skies and rain fell throughout the day. After eating BBQ chicken from the grill we noticed a break in the clouds with the possibility for some color and reflections. I think that’s what we got.
