I keep telling myself I must practice more portraits. I tell myself that because I enjoy people and the challenge of lighting and posing. I’ve always felt there are certain photographers who have a knack for relaxing the models and therefore bring out the personality of the person. Only practice will let me know if I have such a gift. This was taken back in February on portrait session with a young man named Dan.

“Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don’t have to like it… it’s just easier if you do.” Katie Bryon

This was taken 11 years ago during a photo session with Susan and Haley in Old Town. I was new to digital, as well as portraits, so it was a good learning experience. Learning continues today as I shot but also as I look back through the archives checking lighting, composition, pose and EXIF data. I found a handful of good poses and expressions that are not usable due to shutter speeds of 1/5 of a second. Hopefully that would not happen today.
