I only know how to approach a place by walking. For what does a street photographer do but walk and watch and wait and talk, and then watch and wait some more, trying to remain confident that the unexpected, the unknown, or the secret heart of the known awaits just around the corner. – Alex Webb
I did not wait long for this man to walk into the scene, it just took on its own life. I was drawn to the sign and boarded up windows. He just happened to walk into the frame as I raised my camera. If I’d not been ready, this scene would not exist. One of the traits a street photographer needs.
An interesting and compelling image will tell a story. Some stories will be about a morning sunrise overlooking a pond while another is about two small children mesmerized by street musicians. I love stories!
A couple years ago I read a very good book by David deChumin called Within the Frame. The other night while thumbing through the book an image I had taken four years ago came to mind. The image was taken when I was exploring the streets of Alexandria, Virginia on one of my days off. I have no memory of what I thought at the time or what prompted me to take this image. I believe it was her patient waiting. I just composed the scene in the view finder and pressed the shutter. Now four years later, something David wrote in his book about telling a story prompted me to revisit it. Strange how that happens.
I walked to the top of one of the cruise ship buildings where people could look out over the Sound towards Bainbridge Island. I noticed this young lady as she stared out over the Sound, seemingly lost in her thoughts. I quickly took two images and then moved on to leave her with her solitude.
I had taken the ferry boat earlier in the day over to Bainbridge Island. The gentle movement of the ferry through the water felt soothing to me. Totally different than an aircraft. I walked around the ferry on the upper deck looking out across the Sound while a light mist fell. I found this young lady avoiding the elements and reading her book. After the 35 minute ride I walked through the small town. It really is small so I immediately fell in love with. I meandered through a small bookstore then stopped in for a hot chocolate and scone at the Blackbird Bakery. It was another good day!
Most of the images I post are landscapes, still life or street scenes. However, portraits are an interest and something I probably should spend more time doing. Technical skills aside, one of the key attributes of a portrait photographer is that they like people, are curious about their subjects and desire to really connect with them. This is true whether the subject is in the studio or discovered on the street.
Anyway, I would like you to meet Jamie. I met Jamie about 3 years ago when she was working as a flight attendant. We got together a couple of times for photo sessions, one of which is here. She use to be a flight attendant and now is a full time college student. Thanks, Jamie for the opportunity and I wish only the best for you.
Over a week ago I sat in the shade at our hotel to get out of the 103 degree heat. It actually was too cold for me in the hotel so I needed to be outside. While today in Colorado our temperatures during the night were in the high 40’s and we had mixed snow and rain in the high country. The dark clouds along the mountains reminds me, winter is approaching. Have a super day!
