    Window Light

    Dianne

Portraits are tough for me. I feel confident in my technical skills but feel some weakness in capturing the essence or personality of the person. How many good images I get will depend on the relationship established between myself and the model. The more comfortable that relationship the better the chances for good images. In this short session with Dianne I asked her to find a comfortable pose, hold it while I take an image then move on to another pose. She did very well, I enjoyed working with her, and I believe a couple more short sessions would offer more keepers.

I also enjoyed the diffused window light from our overcast skies, cold and wintery. This window light is soft, delicate, creating minimal shadows with warm tones. But, in all honesty, what really makes this a nice portrait is the beautiful young lady! Thank you, Dianne!

    Tom

    Tom

I would like to introduce you to one of those people who has a contagious smile: Tom. His Greek heritage may have something to do with that smile. He is always joyful, enjoying life, and thus the smile. He travels along in this life at a slower pace than most of this western culture. However, he does quicken the pace when he steps on a soccer field with his league, one of his passions. He is not controlled by a cellphone or computer since he does not own either one. He loves people and the conversations that can be shared and therefore never knows a stranger. He likes Greek food (chicken lemon soup) and his ouzo. He has this ability (actually it’s more an obsession) to sense when any beautiful woman is nearby. And, then his smile gets bigger! 🙂

    Short Shorts

    Short Shorts

I’ll probably get a lot of flak for this image but here it is anyway. While in Portland last week we tried to get on a harbor cruise to see the lighthouses, one of those touristy things to do. It was sold out but if we waited a few minutes they would know if there were any no-shows. I sat on a low bench to get in some people watching. As my eyes roamed around I noticed these young girls walk up to the ticket window. That’s when I realized just how low the bench was and the perspective it offered me. When I was in my 20’s or 30’s or 40’s or 50’s, short shorts would always catch my attention. Now that I’m in my 60’s I must admit short shorts still catch my attention. However, I respond differently. I now ask why they dress like this while back then that question never entered my mind. I just smiled and stared. Since I had my camera with me, a low perspective :-), and I had a subject of attraction, I took one shot. Short shorts for sure.

    Posing

    Posing

I mentioned a few days ago about a new coffee shop (hangout) I found in Old Gahanna. I think it is going to be a nice hit for the people in the area. It’s also next to a Cold Stones Creamery (which can be trouble), a couple of decent restaurants and a couple of bars. Anyway, I witnessed an interesting scene on that first visit. While sitting inside enjoying the air-conditioning, I noticed this young child perched one of the tables outside the coffee shop. She had a couple of siblings with her and all were dressed in white. A photographer was shooting some outdoor family portraits and was using the tables as props. Since the photographer, and the mother, were working hard to get her to pose, I figured I needed to shoot at least one image from my angle. Not sure what his images looked like but her pose worked just fine for me.

    Telling a Story

    Enjoying Life

I found these two gentlemen enjoying the afternoon in the harbor at Portland, Maine. The image tells a story. Well, actually it tells several stories as each of us will see and envision our own. Are they fishermen or sailors? Retired fishermen or sailors? Wealthy? Married to money? Or maybe all of them. What does it tell you or does it even speak to you?

Anyway, I did play a bit with Topaz Adjust on this image, one of those fun things I must do once in a while.
