This was taken a few weeks ago at the dam on a foggy morning. It has the feeling of going nowhere. However, on a positive note, today is suppose to be sunny and warm. Nice way to enjoy a day in November.

… there are no images.
Images don’t magically appear on our hard drives because we think about them. We must crawl out of our warm beds on a cold and foggy morning for the magic to happen. If we’re not out there, there are no images.

Morning Fog
I woke early Saturday morning, checked the weather forecast and saw they were predicting fog. I quickly showered and headed out the door. Even though the mood of fog draws me into images, I have few images of these weather conditions. I have more opportunities out here in the Ohio Valley than I do in my Colorado. But, just like the couch, we have to get up out of a warm comfy bed to find these images. But, so worth it. If you look close you can see a lone fisherman at the waters edge.

Foggy Morning
A foggy morning along the Yellowstone River in Lamar Valley. One of my favoritest places I’ve ever been.

Amidst the Fog
Fog is an instrument nature uses to create one of its beautiful emotive scene. As a nature photographer we can take this same tool to make our images. Fog acts as a natural soft box, scattering light and reducing contrast. I’ve learned to expose for the the fog and not the subject, very similar to snowfall. As I headed for the coffee shop, I remembered the isolated trees in the open field and actually saw this image in my mind. It was not quite what I had envisioned but it works for me.

Solitude is in the Present
“Solitude is not something you must hope for in the future. Rather, it is a deepening of the present, and unless you look for it in the present you will never find it.” Thomas Merton
As time has move on and my age has increased I joyfully welcome my times of solitude. We can create a place in our homes to sit in quiet solitude to start and end our days. With our busy and noisy world I also seek to find places outside the community of cities and towns. I can find these places in our parks, both local and national. To some this bench may seem lonely while shrouded by fog but it is offering rest to anyone who wishes to sit.
