… free of hatred and despair

The mind does not find peace, nor does it enjoy pleasure and joy, nor does it find sleep or fortitude when the thorn of hatred dwells in the heart.

A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life, Chapter VI: 3

As I walk around the yard I’m aware of how many different shapes, patterns, and colors of leaves there are. Cottonwoods, elms, locust, birch. What many people don’t realize is that scientists have determined that in all the world, no two leaves of any plants are identical. Each is one of a kind—unique.

We can say the same with humans, no two are identical. We share our humanity through our various colors, shapes and sizes. Hatred is an unnecessary thorn of an ideology, a false belief, planted within us, that separates and destroys lives. Gandhi says, “No two leaves are alike, and yet there is no antagonism between them.” I pray today that the world be free of hatred and despair and fully embrace the uniqueness and beauty that each of us brings to the world.

It began to seem that one would have to hold in the mind forever two ideas which seemed to be in opposition. The first idea was acceptance, the acceptance, totally without rancor, of life as it is, and men as they are: in the light of this idea, it goes without saying that injustice is a commonplace. But this did not mean that one could be complacent, for the second idea was of equal power: that one must never, in one’s own life, accept these injustices as commonplace but must fight them with all one’s strength. This fight begins, however, in the heart and it now had been laid to my charge to keep my own heart free of hatred and despair.

    Real Change

If any order is to be brought into the chaos of the modern world, if anything is to be salvaged from the wreckage and made the foundation of a better world in the future, this can only be done by those who have attained what Eckhart attained – loss of self and surrender to God in the Soul’s Ground. It is that, and that alone, which can produce real change, because in the last analysis the world can only be changed by changing the people who live in it.

Cyprian Smith, The Way of Paradox

Well, Emma said I was 37 minutes late for coffee this morning. I’ll not do that again!!! All kidding aside, I did sleep in late and arrived later than usual. And, her mocha tasted just just fine. I meet some friends at noon today and then been invited to a spring equinox celebration of Storytelling/Song/Poetry. I’ve never been to anything like this. I know three of the poets today so I will go see what it’s like.

    We have to change…

A lot of our fear, hatred, anger, and feelings of separation and alienation come from the idea that we are separate from the planet. We see ourselves as the center of the universe and are concerned primarily with our own personal survival. If we care about the health and well-being of the planet, we do so for our own sake. We want the air to be clean enough for us to breathe. We want the water to be clear enough so that we have something to drink. But we need to do more than use recycled products or donate money to environmental groups. We have to change our whole relationship with the Earth.

    Thich Nhat Hanh

I guess if I were to have a resolution or goal for the coming year it would be to continue the change in my relationship with Mother Earth, not just in my thinking but in my actions.
