    Another Me

Wow, Friday is already here, another week went zinging by. For my self-portrait I did a quick setup in my hotel room. We do things like this when we’re on the road with some idle time at the hotel. I prefocused and used my self timer. I used the hotel ironing board as my tripod, just about the right height when sitting in the desk chair. This is also the first image I’ve ever processed in sepia, it’s always been color or B/W. I get home at midnight tonight and then two days off. I almost hesitate to post a self-portrait on the same page as flowers and sunrises. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Since I purchased the AF-S Nikon 35mm f1.8 G lens, it has become my travel lens while I work as a flight attendant. It’s small size and light weight make it easy to pack in my roller board . I no longer carry a camera bag but wrap my camera, with lens attached, in some clothing and fly the blue skies. And, in my opinion it takes some pretty sharp images. I do not carry a tripod so any images taken will be handheld, as in this self-portrait. The light for this image is from my hotel window just as the sun is going down.

    The Mystery of Self

    Self
    Self

“Whether he is an artist or not, the photographer is a joyous sensualist, for the simple reason that the eye traffics in feelings, not in thoughts.” by Walker Evans

A sensualist can be defined as someone who derives happiness from the pleasures of the senses. Evans quote caused me to ask if I’m a sensualist? Yes. As a photographer, I enjoy the time spent in nature with my camera or working with someone during a portrait session. When I am working at creating an image I am seeing with my eyes, passing messages to the brain and heart as they work together. Feelings arise within me: joy, excitement, contentment. At those times I am living the present moment and have my focus on what is in front of me.  The feelings keep me there.

    Looking Inward

    Looking Inward

I believe a spiritual journey is a journey within ourselves, taking a look at what lies within. Somewhere within us is a bright light. While walking along my path I have found some things that help me.

I journal as a way of discovery and a way to slow down. Prayer and meditation has become a way to commune with my Higher Power. It has taken effort and a of lot trust along this path but the journey is worth it. Each day we see a bit more about ourselves, finding peace and happiness. Each step allows us to see a brighter light illuminating everything around us.

Light is the key to photography. It illuminates our subjects bringing out details and colors. As we look out a window our faces will be lit by the incoming light. The closer we draw to the window’s light the more details we will be able to see in the shadows. Conversely, the farther away we are from the window the less details we will see in the shadows. So, the closer we come to the light the brighter everything around us becomes. Looking inward will make our world around us brighter.
