As morning light came in through my living room window yesterday, the camera came out. Exposed for highlights and wah lah. It works for this photographer.

sun casts long blue shadows
a canvas of snowI love the art of light and the shadows. Scenes like this are the reason I carry a camera with me almost all the time. I took this a week ago as I stepped out my front door. However, today looks much different. Snow moved in yesterday afternoon and continued through the night. Today the sun is nowhere to be seen and therefore neither are shadows. It is presently 9 degrees and we have at least 6 inches of snow. It’s a snow day. I will probably spend much of the day in this chair. Stay warm.

We have to change…
A lot of our fear, hatred, anger, and feelings of separation and alienation come from the idea that we are separate from the planet. We see ourselves as the center of the universe and are concerned primarily with our own personal survival. If we care about the health and well-being of the planet, we do so for our own sake. We want the air to be clean enough for us to breathe. We want the water to be clear enough so that we have something to drink. But we need to do more than use recycled products or donate money to environmental groups. We have to change our whole relationship with the Earth.
Thich Nhat HanhI guess if I were to have a resolution or goal for the coming year it would be to continue the change in my relationship with Mother Earth, not just in my thinking but in my actions.

Awareness of Shadows
How can I be substantial if I do not cast a shadow? I must have a dark side also If I am to be whole.
Carl Gustav JungJung believed that our shadow describes those aspects of our personality that we choose to reject and repress. After many years of reflecting back on my own experiences in life I am able to see where I hid from my dark side. Jung also says, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” This awareness has helped me in many areas of my life, mainly in relationships.
I’ve also become aware of the value shadows bring to my photography. Some of my favorite images are because of the interplay of shadows and light within them.

Shadows on the patio
We must become so alone, so utterly alone, that we withdraw into our innermost self. It is a way of bitter suffering. But then our solitude is overcome, we are no longer alone, for we find that our innermost self is the spirit, that it is God, the indivisible. And suddenly we find ourselves in the midst of the world, yet undisturbed by its multiplicity, for our innermost soul we know ourselves to be one with all being.

Who Knew?
“He who thinks he knows, doesn’t know. He who knows that he doesn’t know, knows. For in this context, to know is not to know. And not to know is to know.”
