    Stillness and Quiet

I had Reservoir Ridge Natural Area all to myself this morning. It had warmed up to 20 degrees by the time I got there, which could have been the reason I had it to myself. Low clouds sat atop the mountains and some snow is falling in the higher elevations. We are expecting to have more snow this afternoon at the lower elevations and cold temperatures, mid-teens, again tonight. No wind. Stillness and quiet. It’s a good way to enjoy a coffee.

Have a question for all my wise friends out there. Is it acceptable, if they cancel the two-on-two basketball matchups at Rolland Moore Park because to a couple inches of snow and temperatures of 18 degrees, cop a resentment and eat Oreo cookies and drink chocolate milk for breakfast. Asking for a friend. 😁Stay warm!

    brush strokes of frost

Cottonwood leaves covered in frost – Arapaho Bend Natural Area in 2014

Wintery morning stroll in a world turned white
I love nature’s work of art created in the cold of night
So grateful for these lovely brush strokes of frost

I did not pick up my camera all day. A bit unusual for me. The sun has just set. I feel the need to write a post. So, I sit at my desk. The cold air gathers around my feet as I ask for words to write. I sort through them in the quiet. The furnace turns on. I no longer sit in silence. I stay in my chair awaiting for more words and they are given. This post is simple, nothing eloquent. It’s what I do and my way to reach out to a virtual world of friends. I’ll end with a prayer that you feel the love within you and sleep well.

    Winter Draws Near

    falls morning stroll

    winter draws near

We are on the second day of a five day cold stretch. Nighttime temperatures are to be around 20 degrees. The bright side is we’re expecting to have mostly sunny days. The last two days I’ve awoken to the beauty of a frost covered world. A reminder that winter is quickly approaching.

    Christmas cards

A cold morning. We received about one inch of snow from this storm. This was outside my condo this morning. They say it is to be mostly sunny today. Patches of blue sky and sunshine are now appearing.

My daughter woke last Monday morning not feeling well. Her employer told her to make an appointment for a COVID-19 test and stay home and not to return until she had test results. She works for Home Depot and is face-to-face with the public since this whole thing began. She was not able to get an appointment until Friday afternoon then had to wait in line for two hours. She received test results yesterday and tested positive. She is now in quarantine for two more weeks and gratefully will be paid for a full three weeks. She did not feel good for the first three days but felt much better last night. She has slept a lot and any sort of exertion causes her to be winded (stairs). She made me smile last night when talking to her on the phone because she is planning to make Christmas cards this year with all the free time. 😍 Good spirits!

    Sharing a poem with you

    In Praise of the Earth

    Let us bless
    The imagination of the Earth,
    That knew early the patience
To harness the mind of time,
Waited for the seas to warm,
    Ready to welcome the emergence
    Of things dreaming of voyaging
    Among the stillness of land.

And how light knew to nurse
The growth until the face of the Earth
Brightened beneath a vision of color.

When the ages of ice came
    And sealed the Earth inside
    An endless coma of cold,
The heart of the Earth held hope,
    Storing fragments of memory,
Ready for the return of the sun.

    Let us thank the Earth
    That offers ground for home
    And holds our feet firm
    To walk in space open
    To infinite galaxies.

    Let us salute the silence
    And certainty of mountains:
    Their sublime stillness,
    Their dream-filled hearts.

    The wonder of a garden
Trusting the first warmth of spring
Until its black infinity of cells
    Becomes charged with dream;
    Then the silent, slow nurture
Of the seed’s self, coaxing it
To trust the act of death.

    The humility of the Earth
    That transfigures all
    That has fallen
    Of outlived growth.

    The kindness of the Earth,
    Opening to receive
    Our worn forms
    Into the final stillness.

Let us ask forgiveness of the Earth
For all our sins against her:
    For our violence and poisonings
    Of her beauty.

    Let us remember within us
    The ancient clay,
    Holding the memory of seasons,
    The passion of the wind,
    The fluency of water,
    The warmth of fire,
    The quiver-touch of the sun
And shadowed sureness of the moon.

    That we may awaken,
    To live to the full
    The dream of the Earth
    Who chose us to emerge
    And incarnate its hidden night
    In mind, spirit, and light.

    Yesterday’s storm has passed

    Snow clinging to branches

Blue skies and sunshine bring their warmth this morning.
I see tree branches bending over under the snow’s burden
I watch as the sun’s warmth weaken the snow’s grip,
causing small glistening snowstorms to flutter downward.

I check on the nesting geese, standing on my toes to look in
They stretch their necks to check on my presence. All’s well.
Looking up, the sky seems bluer, no contrails, less pollution.
I listen to the quiet, the music that soothes this soul.

I’m filled with gratitude for this wonderful world
and the gift of being present, a part of all this beauty.
