    Mom's Birthday

No photo today as I’m down in Phoenix to celebrate my mothers 78th birthday. Good times as I relax and eat way too much food. We will head over to Casa Grande today and eat, yet again, with my sister and brother-in-law. Hope everyone enjoys their day!

    Looking Up

    New York City

As of August 2008, New York City has 5,538 high rise buildings, with 50 completed skyscrapers taller than 656 feet (200 m). This is more than any other city in United States, and second in the world behind Hong Kong. This image of the GE building taken from 5th avenue last November when Kirsten and I had a long overnight. The GE Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. The 70-story building is the 9th tallest building in New York City and the 32nd tallest in the United States. One thing about Midtown Manhattan is the lack of horizons. You will find yourself almost always looking up.

    Handmade

    Savannah Rose

I spent some time just watching and talking with this gentleman while he made his Savannah Rose. They are made from banana or palm leaves and can range in a variety of green and yellow shades. Along River Street in Savannah you will encounter many of these craftsmen, working with their hands to create art. I admire individuals who work and create with their hands. We live in a culture when most of what we purchase is machine manufactured. When I think about it our clothing, shoes, watch, sunglasses, etc., are all manufactured by machinery. What was the last thing you purchase that was handmade?

    Living on the edge

    Mailbox #702

Coming home from a visit to the doctors office I noticed this tree and how the afternoon light was bringing out it’s wonderful colors. I made another illegal u-turn, then stood among traffic to get a photo. I stood in traffic because I wanted the mailbox to big bigger and I only had the 35mm lens. Maybe I should bring along one of those construction workers fluorescent vests and keep a couple of pylons in my trunk. Then again a zoom lens would have been safer but there’s nothing like living on the edge.

    Yes, this telephone pole…

    Leaning Telephone Pole

..  does lean to the left? Who noticed it?

I was a visitor to this neighborhood when I saw this scene and the first thing I noticed was the lean of the pole. Heavy telephone lines pull on the pole unceasingly. However, I wonder, if you live near this telephone pole or drive by every day to work, would you  notice it leans? All of us can admit we daily over look the common everyday scenes. Just a question.

This also reminds me of a tendency I have to tilt my horizons. Not sure why I do it but a fellow photographer picked up on that a few years back. I still struggle with it every once in a while. I have the grid patterns turned on in my view finder to help.  Following the same question as in yesterday’s post, do you think therapy would help?

    Dysfunctional Photographer

About two weeks ago I lost the lens hood for my 35mm f1.8 lens. The new hood arrived today so the lens now functions as it did before. 🙂

Actually, I want to share my reactions when I discovered it missing, it surprised me. I didn’t get too upset as I knew I could easily replace it. I did backtrack to see if I could find it. Nuttin! What surprised me was my attitude towards that lens: I acted like it was dysfunctional with the hood missing. My first response was to put it back in my bag and use another lens which had a hood. I may have but I was on the road and it was the only lens I brought. So, guess what’s really dysfunctional. For two weeks I’ve been using this lens without a hood and it’s taking pretty darn near perfect images, without a hood. Proving again, it’s the imperfect photographer that screws things up. Think therapy would help me?
