    A Fallen Leaf

    Art is not to be found by touring to Egypt, China, or Peru;
if you cannot find it at your own door, you will never find it.

    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our overnight was in Buffalo, New York not Egypt China or Peru. The view out my window in the morning showed overcast skies and a light rain. With weather like this I can hear a voice whispering an invitation to sleep in a little longer and I did. After eating a light breakfast the rain stopped and the clouds broke offering blue skies. With my camera over my shoulder it was now time for a walk. And, what would I find this morning at my door: a fallen leaf.

    John Wayne

They call this drink a John Wayne. It is a shot of expresso, with a touch of vanilla syrup and marked with half-and-half or, preferably, cream. Since vanilla is not my favorite syrup in coffee, I tweaked it a bit and made it half vanilla and half almond. Seemed to do the trick. So, yes some days I start off with a shot. And, I see that today is Hump-Day, so by noon most of society will be half-way done with their work week. For me it’s the first day of my two day weekend. Maybe, I’ll make it a double and have two shots. 🙂 Have a great Wednesday!

    The Scooter

Blue Scooter – French Quarter, New Orleans

I bought a new, and larger, disc drive so I’ve been moving images to the new drive.  It’s allowing me to go wander through the archives and what fun it is. I’m finding it interesting how I’m noticing images I don’t even remember taking.  Once I see the image, my mind goes back to those moments. The above image was taken in the French Quarters in New Orleans. I remember seeing three people, just to the right, sitting at a table outside of a restaurant. I can even hear them laughing. And, I have no recollection of the purple wall, that one really surprised me. Kinda cool!

I start a 4 day trip on Saturday morning and hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend!

    Showing My Photographs

“We are judged, not by the photographs we take, but by the photographs we show.”

    Ted Grant

I took my first steps into photography when I was 10 or 12 years old. Yet, it was not until I was 50 before I printed and matted my first print. And, what took me so long to take that step? I’ll suggest it was my belief system. At that time, I believed I was not a good  photographer, at least when I compared my images to those I considered photographers. I now believe in my abilities as a developing photographer and I’m accepting myself.  Both of those factors are nurtured by having this photoblog/website. I’m more comfortable with showing my images and in fact enjoy showing images that I know do not have as much power as others may. I’ll even put up snapshots, like yesterday. So, I’m much more comfortable showing my photographs.

    Making Cheese

“Photography is like making cheese. It takes a hell of a lot of milk to make a small amount of cheese just like it takes a hell of a lot of photos to get a good one.”

    Robert Gillis

I won’t call this a good one, but… at least it’s the best one of the session. I made a lot of attempts at this image just to come up with what I have. I played with the light, moving the flash all around, played with the perspective, and sporadically would eat a piece of the cheese then needed to cut another slice. Each time I tried something new I presented myself with the opportunity to learn. In this case I learned more about my wireless flash: such as standby mode does not work in wireless (see page 73 of the SB-800 manual.) I also enjoyed nibbling on the subjects during and afterwards. 🙂

    Peaceful Place

I had not been to Inniswood Gardens in weeks and sure did miss it. I’m finding these Metro parks are vital to me. As I stepped out the car, I immediately felt a settling of my mind and realized just how long it had been since my last visit. Within the park there are so many places to snuggle into and call yours. They have placed benches and gazebos in different places throughout the park just for you. The birds and squirrels like to entertain you with their songs and antics as they enjoy life. So, my time there was peaceful.
