Saying Something

When ink joins with pen, then blank paper can say something.

Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks

This is my latest pen, a Pelikan M205 in Marbled Petrol. It is a swirly teal, blue and green, translucent resin body with a black cap and finial with silver trim. I have Pelikan Aquamarine colored ink in it, which I think matches nicely with the body. As with all my fountain pens and journals I believe there are words hidden within them. It is our task to pick them up and be a part of the process to say something on blank paper.

Retired. Having fun with photography. Journal daily. Meditate daily. Learning haiku/poetry. Have a love for fountain pens.

Beautiful new pen. With your selection of pens, Monte, do you ever consciously try and match your pen and ink with your mood each day?

Good question. I may subconsciously be doing that so I will try to be more aware. Each day I choose 3 pens to carry in my pen case. I do select one to be the pen-for-the-day. I also sometimes will enter a quote from something I read or heard and write that in a different colored ink. There definitely are some pens I seem to write with more. Some for the smoothness of their nib but the color may be a big impact. I’ll have to write about that. 😁

I was wondering the same thing. I imagine a pens characteristics whether they are aesthetic or functional may play a role, at least a subtle one, in creating just like tools of any other creative endeavor.

And I noted you have a pen case, seems like a sign of someone who takes their pens seriously (not that we didn’t know that already! 🙂 )

It’s a small canvas case that holds three pens. There was a time when I wanted everything I could get my hands on and that I could afford. Fountain pens can become an addiction (seriously).

I can believe that! Some you have shown here look really nice. It’s a pretty cool thing to have a collection of in this digital age. Handwriting is an under appreciated art IMO.

When you mentioned pens and journals having words hidden in them, it made me wonder if the same might be said about our cameras. At first I thought, ‘no,’ there is a difference – that the words come from within us while the photographs are external. But perhaps it is what is inside that lets us see what we photograph, not unlike the words that come out when we write. Hmmmm. 😉

Good question to ask, Tom. I would have to say yes. I believe the image is a product of the universe presenting a scene, the camera and lens capability and the person behind the camera. Change one factor and the image will be different. Again, something to write about. 😁
