Sprague Lake

“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder

My friends Duane and Jan are working in an RV park in Estes Park so I made a day trip up there yesterday. We grabbed a bite to eat then headed into Rocky Mountain National Park. It has been a while since I ventured into the park for photos. The day was wonderful and fulfilling as we got to see moose, elk, deer and the beauty of nature. We took a nice walk around Sprague Lake where this image was taken. Sprague Lake is a very shallow lake built up by Abner Sprague to support the lodge he operated here from 1920-1940. Most of the lake is no more than a few feet deep and at times you may see elk or moose out in the middle of it. It has a 3/4 mile walking trail around the lake with many photo opportunities.

Retired. Having fun with photography. Journal daily. Meditate daily. Learning haiku/poetry. Have a love for fountain pens.

Photographers and artists love it. Just about any direction offers a lovely view. I could move 10 feet and it all changed. It was a very windy day so I’m glad to have this one image with calm water. It seems they keep it clean, too. They do not allow any camping in this area but do provide picnic tables and bathroom facilities.

I was lucky to have this blue sky because up until this point in our walk the skies were cloudy and the wind was blowing. I was at the right place at the right time and had my camera.

Earlier we stopped to watch a moose browsing through the willows but too far away for a photo. One of women watching was visiting for the park for the first time and had fallen in love with Sprague Lake. As an artist she had already found her spot and time of day to be there for here painting. Yes, it is popular.
