…that’s a good thing.

The twisted shadows on campus from yesterday

Well the damage to my car is costing me $380 and the raccoon got away. Called my insurance and my deductible is $500. I had some anger as I thought through this thing, both the insrance company and the raccoon. This is the first time I’ve filed a claim in my 54 years of paying insurance premiums. So, my insurance has yet to pay anything, they’ve only taken my money. Of course this also means I’ve never been in a place to need it and that’s a good thing.

Nope, at first thought, it doesn’t seem fair. But then you probably got a little lower rates by taking the $500 deductible, and over an extended period of time, those savings were probably several times more than the cost of this repair. I’ve had this same conversation with myself in the past…but it still doesn’t make it feel right! 🙄
Glad it was quickly repaired and here’s hoping there’s no return visit by Mr./Ms. Raccoon.

Nope, doesn’t make it feel right. I’m also aware of the required maintenance for all these things we consider important in our lives: water heaters, garbage disposals, computers, phones, and more. Should have the car ready by this afternoon.

I would be upset also! I used to carry camera insurance through State Farm and after years and years of premiums, I did one small claim and they jacked up my rates on the next bill. Seems like highway robbery if you ask me. The responsible people who rarely file any claims end up footing the bill for all the others.

We are on the same page, Mark. And, it’s required by law. Strange to think man has setup a law that requires us to pay money to a corporation, that it’s not a option. I understand the reasoning behind it but it has not solved the root cause.

I had a body shop owner tell me one time that insurance covers “everything except a claim.” I’ve always had the insurance I’m required to have or that makes financial sense for me, but have had similar experiences. Unfortunately I’ve a few damage claims but still haven’t come close to getting in benefits what I’ve paid in premiums. The hardest was having to get rid of a car that I actually drove to the body shop because it was considered a total loss. I didn’t even have the option to pay for the repairs myself.

They are designed to make a hefty profit for a service rather than a product. And, a service can be defined and redefined in so many ways. I just can’t get my head wrapped around the concept. But, know it’s all about money.
