A sudden itch to go camping came upon me on Wednesday afternoon. So, I packed up the car and hit the road. Headed in the general direction of the Poudre Canyon looking for an open campsite in the high country. With the fall colors beginning I thought a Thursday and Friday night venture would not be as crowded. I was right on that but surprised to find very few people up there. With no one up there I pretty much had the pick of my choice. I settled on Sleeping Elephant campsite which has about 15 sites, all of them open. I selected number 12, paid my $13 and setup my tent. The birds and chipmunks were immediately talking about the intruder into their space, Not to be unfriendly I starting up a conversation with them. I told them I came up for some quiet and would do my best not to bother them. Seemed to work. The first image is my campsite and the second is an image of Elephant mountain from which they got the name for the campground.

The campsite was neat looking but there were a few problems which I explain in tomorrows post. No I did not climb Elephant Mountain, just took a few images of it. I didn’t want to wake it up. 🙂

Sounds like a great little adventure, Monte. Nice that the natives allowed you the peace and quiet you sought.
I don’t get to do much camping these days, as Kathy considers “roughing it” to be any place without breakfast. That will probably earn me a smack. 🙂

It ain’t easy camping and even tougher when we get older. Yet, being there is just what so many of us really need. We are so conditioned to the easy life many of us have no concept what life was like 100 years ago. The photo of Elephant Mountain was taken just prior to sunset from my campsite. If’n your commnent about earning a smack from Kathy is not referring to a kiss then I suggest you keep your left up at all times. 🙂

I can certainly see where that mountain got its name from Monte. Glad the critters eventually let you settle in.

It was surprising how quiet it did get, when the cars weren’t going by. Isn’t that craziest looking mountain and so obvious to me.
