This is an image of the T.A. Moulton Barn just outside of Grand Teton National Park. The T.A. Moulton Barn is all that remains of the homestead built by Thomas Alma Moulton and his sons between about 1912 and 1945. It sits west of the road known as Mormon Row, in an area called Antelope Flats, between the towns of Kelly and Moose.
I took a workshop back in the fall of 2003. One project we did was with light painting. We setup our tripods and cameras for some long exposures. When we would press our shutters on instructor would run in front of the barn with two lights and paint away. Needless to say he was pretty winded by the time we had taken a dozen or so images.

Nice shot… very good looking image.
Rochester Institute of Technology, one of our local Universities, and one of my alma maters, has a well known photo school. Each year they do a “Big Shot” of some large well known building or location and invite hundreds of people to show up with flashlights (torches?) and photo flashes to run around and provide light for the long exposures. The results are often quite good.
Here is a story about the annual event:

The “Big Shot” would interest me. I’ve played around with it since that workshop but never came away with anything like the barn. I sure have seen some great work by other photographers. It’s comes down to practicing more. 🙂

That’s got to be the most interesting photo of that old barn I’ve seen in a while…maybe ever. Thanks for sharing it! And having the instructor run the lights is much better than running those lights around yourself!

Thank you, Tom. That instructor was Moose Peterson, who is not that small a man. He sure was breathing heavy when we finished.

I agree with Tom. What an interesting, and quite dramatic, photo. That sounds like fun … well, except for being the instructor running around doing all of the ‘painting’ 😉

Thank you, Paul! I have posted this image in color and it is dramatically different. I actually like this better. Here is the link to the color image.

Something I’ve wanted to try but never gotten around to doing it. Nice job on this one Monte, especially getting the instructor to do the hard work.

I highly recommend giving it try. Maybe work something out with your daughter. One of your run around then trade places. It would be good to see what you come up with. I’ve done some still life where I stand near my tripod and point the flash light at my subject. Show us what you get.

This is very cool Monte!

Thanks, Mark!
