The Substance of Silence

Late afternoon at Lake Loveland

But there is greater comfort in the substance of silence than in the answer to a question.

Thomas Merton

When I was younger my friends and I would ride our bicycles to Lake Loveland and fish. Our quest was for crappie and perch that gathered along the trunks of the trees in the water. If memory serves me we would use simple little jigs and it was pretty easy pickings. I have very good memories of those days. And amazingly we did not have smartphones to document it. Nor did mom send us a text message telling us dinner was ready. There seemed to be more silence back then. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Retired. Having fun with photography. Journal daily. Meditate daily. Learning haiku/poetry. Have a love for fountain pens.

There was silence until Mom opened the back door and yelled at the top of her lungs, “DINNERS READY!” She could make her voice cover a fair distance when she wanted to. But, maybe that was because there was more silence. 🙂

I long for that silence, Monte. Your photographs and words do take me there, at least for a moment or two. Thank you. For me it was the gentle crunch, crunching of our dairy cows mowing through the tall grass in the ditch along our country road as I sat on my towel (blanket) and read my Happy Hollister Detective Books while herding those lovely, gentle friends.

Thanks for sharing your childhood memories from the past. It just might be one the best things we can do to bring a smile into our present moments. I like how you refer to the cows as gentle friends!! Hope you two are doing well!
