As per Anita’s suggestion here is yesterdays image converted to black and white in Lightroom. Whadda ya think? Is there enough contrast?

So much for my brilliant idea. I think you hit it right on the mark with your question, “Is there enough contrast?” I think it would need quite a lot more to put the story across. (Listen to me, the quintessential know-nothing when it comes to black and white!) Now, I am scurrying back to the color version. Maybe I’ll just be quiet for a while.

Anita, I will need to work on this image some more. I like the feel of the image and the story but something seems to be missing and I’m not sure what. The first image i post processed it in Topaz Adjust and sort of liked it. I also sort of like the black and white one. Maybe I need to set it aside for awhile and see what germinates later.

I’ll disagree with Anita. A little more contrast wouldn’t hurt it any, but I don’t think it would make that much difference. This conveys the meaning of the photo quite well as it is. Either version works well for me.

Thanks, Paul. I will continue to work on it. Something is there.

It’s a very nice photo to begin with, Monte, and the conversion is well done. If I had to pick, I’m going with the color version simply because of the red hat and green tee shirt. Makes the photo sing.

Your right, the grey tone scale makes me think this was a rather dull moment. Maybe the father wanted a bigger ship. It’s all in the head of the viewer, if we want to communicate a specific feel, we have to emphasise it somehow.

Even as a big fan of B&W, I think that the color works much better. I like the red hat and the green shirt much better.
