Investing in Photography

Coins

A couple of days ago, Sabrina Henry had a good post about what tempts us. It allowed me to reflect back on my temptations in this passion of photography. I have purchased several cameras and lens over the years, trying to find what works for me and with the idea the tool will make me better. And, in this digital era the technology is changing so fast, it’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest gear. With money tight, I’m not able to buy the newest lens or camera but must use what I have. So the best investment I can make in my photography is to practice with what I have.

Monte, sound advice for anyone, whether they can afford the newest gear or not. The photography that can be done with even a basis camera, such as a Cell Phone, is pretty amazing.

    Nice shot of the coins.

    Monte,
All the new gear in the world can not equal a good eye for balance, perspective, interest, etc. It might make photography a little easier or maybe a little more fun
but the fortunate thing is that you have been blessed with the abilities that mere equipment can’t replace.
Keep up the good work and enjoy… Alan Findley-Colorado

I was all inspired to restrain my gear lust, then Alan had to pipe in with the “easier” and “more fun” business. That’s when I remember what generates the gear lust in the first place. I admit that I can never blame the itch for new gear on true need. Drat.

Like you, Monte, I have to think quite a while about purchases and weigh them against what else I won’t be able to buy. but, this hunger for more and better gear with photography will never end, I suppose.

Yes, many of us will want the next gizmo, which in many cases may help us create new and wonderful images, but can it be justified is the question to ask. I know I will continue to buy. 🙂

Can’t agree more. Of the shots I’ve been posting on my blog, most people wouldn’t know the majority were taken with my 10-year-old digital camera, which I still use despite the recent acquisition of a DSLR.
