This is another example of how my photography has evolved. I find images wherever I’m at with whatever props I have around me. And, since I’m always with me, I do have a model to work with. Then the challenge is to find good light and a simple background to place the model.

Maybe a telephoto lens …
… would have worked better in this image. I shoot almost exclusively with a small 35mm f1.8 lens because most of my photography is focused on what’s around me. However, I’ve found there are times when the telephoto lens would be a better choice such as the image above. A telephoto lens would have been a better choice when trying to shoot a photo of this semi truck as it comes towards me rather than a wide angle. I found it difficult to keep my focus and framing while running as fast as hell, camera behind my back and shooting blindly. Yep, a telephoto lens would have been a better choice. Have a super day! 🙂

Edge of the Pond
Here is an observation of my photography I’ve notice over the past few weeks. It seems my photographers eye has evolved over the last three years and my approach to my images has moved in a different direction. Some of this change is due to the equipment I have decided to use. I carry a small prime 35mm lens rather than a large zoom. With the faster prime I can create some interesting images with the shallow depth of field, bringing more focus to my subjects. Also, the faster lens allows me to work better in situations where I have less light. It is less intrusive to subjects and in some conditions is not even noticed.
And, some is due to the environment I shoot in. My work places me in metropolitan areas without transportation so I walk a lot. Therefore the wide open landscapes, such as my sunrises and sunsets, are almost non-existent. If I look at the sunrises and sunsets taken in the past three years, they are taken from a different perspective than I had back in Colorado. There is also a greater challenge to shoot images that do not have the footprint of man. So what I look for in images has changed. An example is the above image taken in Savannah in back of our hotel. It is a holding pond surrounded by other hotels and businesses. I love the lighting but needed to take a bit more care to eliminate the foot print of man.

Shadows
A walk for exercise and with camera in hand found these shadows from the patio umbrella. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Planning the Trip
While waiting for a friend last week I noticed this couple as they came in and took over the only large table by laying out a map and a travel book. They strategically placed their drinks and muffins then dug into the work at hand. I never asked where they were going but loved the scene.

Still on the road
We’re on day 2 of our trip and overnighting in Hartford, Connecticut. With bright sunny skies and some extra time on our overnight we agreed to go exploring. The van took us to the older part of Windsor, CT. where we grabbed a bite to eat and acted like tourists, walking the streets. Our late lunch was at a place called the Union Street Tavern. The tavern is converted from the double-bay Union Street firehouse. I shot this image of the empty bar just as we were leaving.

Kansas City BBQ

The Porker
Kansas City Beers We were in Kansas City for the night and we all were thinking BBQ, so we headed to a place called the SmokeBox BBQ Cafe. If you like BBQ I highly recommend it. You can’t go wrong with any of the pork, beef, chicken or the sausage. Get the dinner plate and you’ll find fries, coleslaw, and beans piled next to the meat, up to here.
I’ve had my drinking days and gratefully no longer indulge but I still enjoy my time out with friends: I spend less money and don’t have hangovers anymore. As we talked about work, motorcycles and golf, I notice the light on the beers and had to take a shot (a photo, silly) of the beer glasses. Hope everyone has a great day!

In Flight
This was taken a few years ago while on a walk in one of the natural areas near my condo in Colorado. I had a telephoto lens on when we noticed the pelicans circling above us. I just stopped and tracked them as the soared.

Waiting
Airports are notorious for waiting, right up there with hospital deliver rooms. I found this man sitting outside the airport in the arrivals section patiently waiting for his ride. And as is the case now a days he was playing a game on his PDA or texting.

Joey

Joey and his mom
Joey and Aunt Maggie A beautiful looking day with clear skies and bright sun shine. Slept in late then off to a coffee shop. In case you’ve not experienced it, coffee shops can offer us extended family. Case in point is Joey and his mom. When she came in she politely asked if it would bother me if her and Joey sat in the chairs across from me. No problem I answered as Joeys smile already had my attention and I wanted a chance to photograph him. You could tell Joey loved life. He seemed to accept me right away and quickly wanted to share with me a few of his toys. But when Aunt Maggie showed up he zoomed around the corner and wrapped her in his arms, sharing lots of love with Aunt Maggie. Two other women showed up so before I left Joey had 4 beautiful women around him as he excitedly shared his smile with them, spoiling each of them in a special way. Thanks, Joey, for brightening up everyones morning at the coffee shop.
For those family and friends who want to know, I did pass recurrent so I still have a job for another year. Enjoy your weekend!
