Everything is a subject. Every subject has a rhythm. To feel it is the raison d’être. The photograph is a fixed moment of such a raison d’être, which lives on in itself.

Two empty benches in the courtyard of one of our hotels. Not sure what the subject is that drew me to make this image. I think it’s the contrast between the white benches and the dark shadows against the wall.

Monte, yes for me neither the benches without the shadows or the shadows without the benches would work nearly as well. In either case it would be like a book with missing pages. Nicely seen, composed and captured!

Thanks, Earl. I do think it was the shadows that drew me to this image. When I first walked into the atrium, from the opposite view of this image, the benches were waht caught my attention. Once I walked around and could see the shadows then I found the image I wanted to make.

A few steps, either left or right, and there wouldn’t have been a lovely image. The stark, clean-lined, white benches against the dark softer shadows produce a fascinating contrast.

And, contrast was what I was seeing.

Hi Monte,
I’m a big fan of benches, and you captured this well. I too love the contrast of the benches and background. Very nice.
