    A Better Photographer, Not!

    At the Desk

Last week I went out and purchased a new Nikon 50mm f1.4 AF-S lens. My intentions were to buy the new 50mm f1.8 AF-S but they did not have any in stock. The salesman suggested I look at the f1.4. After holding that piece of glass in my hand, I succumbed to it’s allure. Before I knew it my wallet was much lighter than when I walked into the store. However, I must say with the limited time I’ve had shooting it, I think I can already see an improvement in my composition and my vision. It looks like this investment is going to make me a better photographer. Makes me wonder how good I’d be with an M9 in my hands. 🙂

And, of course as Murphy would have it, two days ago I received a call from the young man renting my condo informing me the washing machine croaked over the weekend. The inside spindle came off, even tore up a couple of his shirts. And, of course it is no longer under warranty. Sigh!

    Tough Work

    Chaps Girl

A few years ago I did a promo shoot for a new bar/lounge called Chaps. I was asked to shoot images of the girls in their chaps. There were 12 girls and one stretch limousine. Let me tell you that was “pretty” tough work. 🙂

    Car Show

I found a car show this past weekend and since I happen to have my camera with me I stopped and wandered aimlessly around. There are still some hard core collectors out there and anxious to share stories with you. I say some older model cars alongside the newer model so we could see the difference in the changes.

I was surprised at how many memories awakened of those years that seem so long ago. I used to own a 56 Chevrolet 4 door sedan. Paid $165 for back in 1967. It had a the small 265 V8 engine. Man I wish I had that car.

    Face-to-face

    Kenworth

Here’s another example of eliminating stuff so we can pull the viewer face-to-face with our subject, a Kenworth grill. If you look close you can see a few bugs who have gotten a little to close in their face-to-face encounter with this mechanical beast. 🙂

    Jamie

    Jamie

Most of the images I post are landscapes, still life or street scenes. However, portraits are an interest and something I probably should spend more time doing. Technical skills aside, one of the key attributes of a portrait photographer is that they like people, are curious about their subjects and desire to really connect with them. This is true whether the subject is in the studio or discovered on the street.

Anyway, I would like you to meet Jamie. I met Jamie about 3 years ago when she was working as a flight attendant. We got together a couple of times for photo sessions, one of which is here. She use to be a flight attendant and now is a full time  college student. Thanks, Jamie for the opportunity and I wish only the best for you.

    Arizona Desert

All landscapes have their own beauty, whether that is a beach scene, a glacial mountain, the arid prairie, the desert, a gentle snowfall or a distant lightening storm. We can all photograph these scenes but keeping them beautiful for future generations to enjoy requires knowing how to coexist in each of these landscapes.

    It was Break Time

    Clover

Everyone likes taking a break, at least I do. The schedules for flight crew can seem strange to those who are accustomed to a straight 40 hour work week. It would take more time than I want to commit to try and explain these schedules. By FAA regulations we cannot have a duty day longer than 16 hours and I wholeheartedly agree with that. However, I just finished a trip where one of our duty days was almost 14 hours. So when we had a break, we took a break. After grabbing something to eat I went back on the airplane to just relax, away from the hustle of the airport. As I sat down I noticed the tail of the aircraft next to me and knew I wanted this framed image of the fawn. It’s always fun to watch children look out the windows of our aircraft to see what animals they can find on the airplanes tails. In the background you can see the main terminal of DIA, where the roof looks like a series of tents.
