    Memorial Day Begins

Memorial Day Sunrise on County Road 13

I awoke at 4:00 am, made a French Press coffee, put it in my thermos then drove out east to Weld County in anticipation of the morning sunrise. It is a beautiful day. We had a few rain showers yesterday afternoon which makes it a bit humid and therefore I came home chilled. However, the need to be out there and listen to all the Meadowlarks singing to me and watch the sun rise was worth it.

I keep telling myself I must practice more portraits. I tell myself that because I enjoy people and the challenge of lighting and posing. I’ve always felt there are certain photographers who have a knack for relaxing the models and therefore bring out the personality of the person. Only practice will let me know if I have such a gift. This was taken back in February on portrait session with a young man named Dan.

Odell Brewing is a local brewery in Fort Collins. Doug Odell, his wife, and his sister joined forces and opened up the Odell Brewery in 1989.

Odell Brewing are now the 34th largest craft brewery in the country distributing beer to just 14 states.. While the brewery crafts a variety of beers, its roots are built on British styles. Innovation and creativity meet balance, consistency and quality in each brew.

The brewery’s managed growth strategy has created and fostered a culture of family and collaboration. In 2015, the Odell family founders sold the majority of the company to its co-workers (now co-owners) in a combined management buyout and ESOP.

This image is the side of one of their beer trucks. It has the colors and patterns that called to this photographer.

    Our Spring Snow Storm

It has been snowing for that past 24 hours, a heavy wet spring snow. Schools closed down yesterday afternoon as the snow accumulation was much more than predicted. There was no need or desire to be out in the mess, so yesterday I sat in my condo reading and writing while listening to tree branches snapping and cracking. I took down the soup from the freezer and put it on the stove. Nothing better than a winter storm outside and the smell of soup cooking inside. This storm has brought some heavy damage to our trees.

This morning I ventured to Rowland Moore Park in the interest of seeing how much damage to the trees. I was surprised to see only small to medium branches were broken and no trees down. But, I also could see the amount of snow accumulation on the picnic tables. I read this morning the snow accumulation on Fort Collins was 5 inches. However, I estimated 8 inches at my condo and by looking at this table that seems accurate.

The campus at Colorado State University took some heavy damage. This sidewalk is along Shields Avenue on the west side of campus. I was shocked as I drove along and needed to stop a few images of the damage. In this image you can see multiple tree branches down and one tree completely uprooted and laying in the parking lot. Just around the corner from here was a massive tree that had come done and was on top a someones car. They are not going to be happy. 🙁

    Columbines

    Columbines

Well it is Spring but they are predicting rain and possible snow starting Wednesday night and into Friday. We will take the moisture but not to excited about the cold temperatures. Thought I would post and image of one of Colorado’s Columbines before the cold gets it.

The Rocky Mountain Columbine Columbines bloom in pastel shades of blue, violet, red, yellow and white. There are 70 species of columbines in the world and about 1/3 are native to North America. Colorado specifies the white and lavender Rocky Mt. Columbine which has blue-violet petals and spurs, a white cup and yellow center. Blue is a symbol of the sky, white represents snow, and yellow symbolizes Colorado’s gold mining history. It was designated the official state flower of Colorado in 1899 after winning the vote of Colorado’s school children. I was way too young to vote but I would have voted for it. 🙂
