    Yes, these doors are hiding a couple of trash dumpsters. Full of garbage. Things discarded by others and considered useless. Yet, I have watched people rummaging through dumpsters finding things of value to repair, fix and reuse. What most of us assumed to be garbage behind those doors has value, to someone.

    I have no new year resolutions. However, this coming year there will be the task of continuing to open doors. I feel that behind the door are gifts and talents I’ve discarded, never used, or even knew about, not trash. Those doors I’ve opened in 2013 have provided for growth as a son, father, grandfather, elder and a photographer. So, I’m looking forward to 2014. Happy New Year!

    I haven’t been walking as much lately because I’m having trouble with the sciatic nerve in my left hip. This is due to the scoliosis I’ve had in my lower back for most of my life and is a sign its getting worse. The soreness and aching in my back has been something I’ve accepted but this pain my hip has bothered me enough to see a doctor.

    The trip to doctor and x-rays shows the real condition: 40 degree curve in the lower lumbar and outward twist of my spine on my left side. I have deterioration in all five discs and bone spurs. After showing me the x-rays he told me the options I face. Unfortunately none of those options will fix my back but they can help me restore some health to my body. He then asked me what “I” wanted to do. I liked that! So, I start therapy and an education program. My work involves primarily standing and walking on a moving aircraft. We never just stand or walk as if we were on a sidewalk because of the constant movement of the aircraft. I have much more to do in this life and need my health to attain those dreams.

    Taking the Same Path

    One of the other suggested components of motivation is persistence. So, I decided to look at that for a bit. Persistence is defined as the firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. Once we’ve started our task is to continue to its completion. My persistence is always in flux, depending on how committed I am. I don’t think persistence needs to take on the form of insanity where we repeat the same steps and get the same results, but trying something else or approaching our subject with a different perspective to attain what we need or to discover something new. It can be as simple as walking the same paths with newer eyes or walking in the opposite direction. Who knows what we will see that we missed the previous times. Example: I’ve walked this street before but never seen this door. Wonder when they put it there. 🙂

    I’m always looking for doors and church doors are even better. So while walking the streets of the towns I travel to, I make sure to keep my eye on doors.I took a bit of a different approach for this door by placing it in the background rather than the foreground. It doesn’t matter what church it is or what flower it is we just need to have our camera and be open to the muse.

    In 2009 it was estimated that the US had 58,000 storage facilities with approximately 1 in 10 people renting one of these units within these facilities. I’m one of those individuals who rents one of these units, the smallest one I could find. I needed to place the few pieces of furniture and personal items, I own in storage while working in Columbus, Ohio.  I glad to say that next week I will be moving into an apartment and will clean out this unit. My sister and I have had a couple of good laughs because I don’t remember what I have in there. Wonder what I’ll find . 🙂
