    We never belonged to you…

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
    and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
    the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
    and you can’t breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
    We never belonged to you.
    You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

    Margaret Atwood, The Moment

Like so many of my images, something called me to stop and press the shutter button. I pulled into the Running Deer Natural Area parking lot and took the image from there. I did not create any of the beauty in this scene, nature did and lovingly shares it with us. Our task is to accept the gift of its presence and beauty with grateful hearts! May we come to realize we belong in this world not as conquerors but as integral parts of it.

    What we see…

“…drink in the beauty and wonder at the meaning of what you see.”

Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder

Since I began practicing a simple and slower life, which means being awake and present to the moment and spending less time in my head, it seems I experience much more awe and wonder in life. And it’s the simplest things that catch my attention. This morning it was hearing the robins singing outside my bedroom window gently urging me to get up. And a couple weeks ago it was noticing the life giving drops of moisture on a leaf outside the coffee shop. With life getting shorter there is a desire within me to see and experience more of the beauty and wonder of nature.

    In the presence of beauty

The human soul is hungry for beauty; we seek it everywhere – in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion and in ourselves. No-one would desire not to be beautiful. When we experience the Beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming. Some of our most wonderful memories are of beautiful places where we felt immediately at home. We feel most alive in the presence of the Beautiful for it meets the needs of our soul.

    John O’Donohue

What a beautiful morning for a bicycle ride along Spring Creek to Mugs for coffee and wonderful conversation. This is a good time of the year for images like this due to the timing of my ride and the rising of the sun. I’m sharing this image of what I get to experience on these morning rides. Alissia was my barista and an Old Town mocha was my drink. A few clouds have now moved in as a cold front arrives late tonight which I hope brings us moisture in the form of rain and snow early Friday morning. And, both Friday and Saturday nights could be below freezing. I will be okay with that if we also get moisture. May you enjoy this day!

    Thanksgiving’s Predawn Sky

Finding beauty in a broken world is creating beauty in the world we find.

    Terry Tempest Williams

It was a very cold morning at 22 degrees. I felt gratitude for the life I am living as I stepped from my car and walked to my favorite rock at Pineridge Natural Area. The rock was just as hard as the last time I sat on it but this morning it was also quite cold. The sky was beginning to turn a light pink then shifted into a darker pink. I accepted the gift of a beautiful predawn sky. It was quiet, still and serene. In the early twilight I could see a group of four hardy runners bouncing along the trail with their headlamps as they circled Dixon Reservoir. I assume they were working up an appetite for turkey dinner later today or maybe a warm cinnamon roll with coffee when they returned home. I agree Terry Tempest Williams quote, there is much beauty to be found in this broken world. I then made my way to Mugs in Old Town for a mocha and blueberry scone. They were having the annual Turkey Trot going on so the streets were blocked off for the race and people were gathering for the race. I decided to head back home before it became a mess. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Touched by it!

Storm clouds at Pawnee Grasslands – July 2012

Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

    Hermann Hesse

It is a quiet Sunday afternoon with clear blue skies and sunshine. We are in the low 90’s. It looks like much of the nation is toasty. I consider myself lucky to have visited many sacred places, had the experience of standing there taking it all in and even bringing home an image I liked. I’m aware some will consider scenes like this as dull, desolate and boring. I, on the other hand, consider it a beautiful, intimate and sacred home to be cherished and respected. I am also interested in the landscapes of beauty within a short distance of home. This scene meets both of those criteria for me. Yes, there is an effort required to visit these sacred places. However, in my experience, when we make the effort it will change us. As I looked back in my archives of this area I began thinking I need to make another hour-long drive out there! This sacred landscape is our home and I want to be touched by it!

    Beholding…

There’s a difference between seeing something and beholding it.

    Martin Shaw

The sun shines, the wind blows, the leaves on the trees dance wildly, robins sing happily, squirrels chase one another, a flotilla of pelicans float on the reservoir, and white clouds drift across the blue sky. There is so much beauty around us to see and behold. They all grab my attention, maybe even calling to me. I hope you had a wonderful Friday and may you have a wonderful weekend!!!

    It Just Blooms

    Daffodils

I spent part of late yesterday afternoon at the CSU Flower Trial Gardens. With my camera and tripod I meandered around for awhile. It is still early in the season so they do not have much planted. And, even though it was a beautiful day there were not many people there. But, I left with the hope of what is to come and the desire to spend more time there this summer. It is not that far of a bicycle ride and there will always be little gems to find. And for me there is also a gift that flowers offer with their beauty, peace and silence. And in today’s competitive world more time among Creation’s gifts is needed for the spirit.

“A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.”

    Beauty

Colorado sunset at Arapaho Bend Natural Area – January 2025

The human soul is hungry for beauty; we seek it everywhere – in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion and in ourselves. No-one would desire not to be beautiful. When we experience the Beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming. Some of our most wonderful memories are of beautiful places where we felt immediately at home. We feel most alive in the presence of the Beautiful for it meets the needs of our soul.

    John O’Donohue

They say the perception of beauty is subjective – people can have differing opinions on what is beautiful. So what one person perceives as beautiful might be ordinary or unappealing to another. I would also add that perception changes as we change. The beauty I see today is different than what I saw 10, 20, 30 years ago. It’s a gift to see beauty in so many things but what sets Beauty apart for me is the experience of being present to it! And, in many ways feeding my soul.
