    There is this Invitation

    Toward Peace

    Clematis

Perhaps some part of me still believes
    peace is a destination,
a place we arrive, ideally together.

I notice how shiny it is, this belief,
like a flower made of crystal,
    beautiful, but lifeless,

devoid of the dust and scuff
that come from living a real day.
    Meanwhile, there is this invitation

to grow into peace the way real flowers grow—
in the dirt. With blight and drought,
    beetles and hail.

    Meanwhile this invitation
to live in the tangle of fear and failure,
to be humbled by my own inner wars

and wonder how to find a living peace
right here, the peace that arrives
when we take just one step through the mess

    toward compassion and notice
as our foot rises our heart also rises
    and in that lifted moment

still scraping along in the dirt,
there is a peace so real we become light,
become the momentum that is the change.

    Words

    Clematis

“Language has created the word loneliness to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.”

    Paul Tillich

Words have become important to me as I’ve journaled through the past few years. And, words are important in my attempts to express thoughts and ideas on this blog. When I came across this quote it very simply gave me the words I was not able to express before. I like that. I use both the words loneliness and solitude in much of my writing. Now they have a much deeper meaning for me. I love words, and flowers, and sunrises, and…

“A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in–what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.”  Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

A few years ago my sister, Sheree, decided to invest time, labor and money into her yard. The fruits of her time, labor and money is now a haven, a sanctuary for her. She knows those plants by name and talks to them everyday. They are family. They love her!

    End of Summer

I made a trip over to the Colorado State University Experimental Flower Garden to see what shape the flowers were in. Needless to say the season is changing so most of the petals are turning brown along the edges. But that’s not gonna stop a photographer with a camera in their hand. I pulled out the 50mm f1.4 and crawl around for 30 minutes.

The second image is called a Mongolian Bell Clematis. I would never have guessed that but once I saw the sign I could see the resemblance to the Clematis family. These were also quite small.

These are some daisies that were being back lit by the setting sun. After the sun went down it sure did feel like Fall. And, of course I got my pants dirty, again. It began raining yesterday evening and is still raining this morning. I put on a crock pot of vegetable soup so with the sound and smell the of rain along with the aroma of the soup it feels like Fall.

    Clematis

A couple years ago my youngest sister, Sheree, started playing in the dirt. By that I mean she became obsessed with transforming her yard into her sanctuary. She has done an awesome job. It’s been therapy and a new field of study for her. She has built porches, flag stone walkways and arbors. She knows each plant and flower, talks to them as she weeds. This Clematis, growing on one of the lattices, was taken in her back yard.

This was taken at a local nursery while shopping with my sister. SHe has several of these plants and is excited to see them this year. I will be in my recurrent training for the next 3 days, so no laptop and a bit of study, classroom work and testing going on. Hope everyone has a good week!
