    To be an inner artist…

Each one of us is doomed and privileged to be an inner artist
who carries and shapes a unique world.

    John O’Donohue

Jeff and I both noticed our bicycle ride to coffee felt like fall this morning. I have been getting up 15 minutes earlier than I usually do and checking to see if the eastern sky looks promising. It did this morning so I drove up to Pineridge Natural Area. My morning there was a calm, serene place and time. Just what I needed. And, I spent time journaling which helps shape my unique inner world as an artist. I did return home with a couple of images I liked. I’m noticing there are fewer birds in the natural areas as some head south. As I wrote that, I comically wondered if maybe the birds know the students are back in town and that’s why they are headed south. The noise level and traffic definitely increases when they arrive! Anyway this was a scene on campus this morning while riding to Mugs at CSU. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

    A Discovered Life

When we make a place for silence, we make room for ourselves. By making room for silence, we resist the forces of the world which tell us to live an advertised life of surface appearances, instead of a discovered life — a life lived in contact with our senses, our feelings, our deepest thoughts and values.

    Keeping my eyes open

Each day offers moments enticing me to keep my eyes
open and aware of the world around me.

No matter how familiar the world may appear to my senses
may these brief moments surprise me as never before.

Oh, to see the sacredness, simplicity, and beauty
of shadows spreading across on my bedroom wall.

    … with you

It was an overcast morning and cool. There was no need for a coat, my fleece would do fine. I slept well and felt refreshed. On most mornings I usually start my day by asking and relying on my intuition. Do I want to head to a natural area and all that it has to offer or do I head to a coffee shop and all it has to offer. This is a gift of retirement. After quiet time my intuition lead me to a local coffee shop. I was not disappointed as my barista, Devan, brightened my day with her latte art. Of course a photo needed to be taken followed by my feeble attempts to write about it.

    crafted with frothed milk
a work of art now created
    no longer just a latte

    the sense of taste awakens
as the visual sense is transformed
when lips touch the cups rim

    now sharing this experience
as a written memory in the journal
    … and with you

    What is my work?

Looking close at nature and its ability to create

“My work is Loving the World.”

    Mary Oliver

I believe nature can create visual art that brings pleasure to my soul. I’ll even say it creates art that touches all of  the senses; smell, touch, visual, audible and taste. Could it be that nature is the ultimate artist? As Mary Oliver ask do I participate as an artist with nature in loving it, respecting it, protecting it?
