    Suspended in the Web

    Suspended in a Web
    Suspended in a Web

I discovered this leaf on one of my walks last evening. It caught my attention immediately and from a distance. The attention calling was how suspended it was and in such a large open space. The web it is tangled is one strand that was stretched across a wide opening. The strand going to the right is about 6 feet long and attaches to a tree. The strand on the left is about 3 feet long and attaches to a second tree.

Small spiders use silk threads for ballooning, an inaccurate term for the dynamic kiting spiderlings (mostly) use for dispersal. They extrude several threads into the air and let themselves be carried away by winds. Although most rides will end a few yards later, it seems to be a common way for spiders to invade islands. Many sailors have reported that spiders have been caught in their ship’s sails, even when far from land. The extremely fine silk that spiders use for ballooning is known as gossamer. In some cases, spiders may even use silk as a source of food. (Wikipedia)

I came across this mother and her son sitting at one of the pianos in Old Town Fort Collins. He was so focused on ticking the ivory and both were singing away. She is holding Winnie the Pooh and has a second baby strapped to her chest. I must admit it was a very entertaining concert. Loved it! I was not familiar with any of their songs but probably will find them on their soon to be released CD.

    Caught in the Grass

I found this leaf caught in the tall grass along the Fisher Nature Area. It seemed to be suspended in the air so I took a shot. When we take the time to notice each leaf has a specific look. The shape, color, and size are all dependent on how much light, water, nutrients, insects and weather. I walked past this leaf a couple days after taking this image and it was gone. I assume blown away during one of the windy days or disturbed by someone passing by.

    The Troublemaker

Dew Covered Spiderweb - Cades Cove Great Smoky Mountains
Dew Covered Spiderweb – Cades Cove Great Smoky Mountains

I’ve never considered myself a troublemaker. Yet, throughout my life I’ve found myself in trouble. The words I’ve said, or not said, the actions I’ve made, or not made, all have presented troublesome times in life for myself and others. Age has helped me learn to be a better student in life and see when I can be the troublemaker.

Life is always offering us situations where decisions we need to be make could cause trouble. I use the following scenario as a simple example. Lets say that while shooting some photographs of a dew covered spider web in wetlands we make the decision to step to the right for a different perspective. We are in trouble as soon the water and mud flow over the tops of our boots. We probably should not have done that. The fault was not the water, the mud, the dew covered spiderweb, the spider who made the web or the boot. That experience offers a lesson that hopefully will not be repeated. 🙂

Unfortunately, there is a tendency to look at others or life events as troublemakers but seldom ourselves. An honest look at broken relationships will show us the words or actions we are responsible for that became troublemakers. When such an approach is made healing can be made in that relationship. Working to make ourselves as peacemakers rather than troublemakers would slowly change much of the world around us and eventually all of the world.

I personally feel if we all looked at the choices we make from life’s experiences we will become more aware of who really caused the trouble. If not, then I promise you, we will step in the muddy water, again.

“The real troublemaker is within us. Our true enemies are our destructive tendencies.” Dali Lama

    All Things Blue Party

    Front Range Sunset
    Front Range Sunset

Some friends put on an all things blue party this past weekend. The idea was have a potluck but all the food must have the color or word blue. We were also asked to bring a blue bottle which they will use to border their garden. Quite an assortment was had. Green salads with blueberries, enchilada casserole with blue tortillas, blueberry pie, guacamole with blueberries and mangos (darn good), blue margaritas for those who imbibe, blue cheese stuffed olives, blue cheese dip, blue cheese stuffed deviled eggs and more (they looked nasty but weren’t bad). It was hot until around 6:00 then clouds settled in, a slight breeze arrived and cooled things off. And to top it off, those clouds offered some nice colors as the sun set. A good time was had by all!

    Even though I’d forgotten

    Glowing Sunset
    Glowing Sunset

Last Friday evening was to be a full moon. I forgot. But things worked out for me anyway. Friday was a day filled with clear blue skies, nary a cloud to be seen and hot. Even with that in mind I jumped in the car to drive out east on some country dirt road for some quiet and open space. I spent a good hour taking everything in, refreshing my soul, as they say. Without clouds to reflect the sun there was no red sky.

I started home around 8:30 pm, after the sun had dropped behind the Rocky Mountain horizon. My route home was to drive south south on County Road 13. Just as I crested the ridge about a quarter mile down the road, I was greeted with a gorgeous view of the rising full moon in the east. I raced ahead and stopped at a couple of places where I figured I could get a decent photo. I have one decent image but, stopping, turning off the engine and taking it all in was what I needed. I was given a wonderful gift for a short period of time, even though I’d forgotten it was to be  full moon.
