My online journal where I share my interests in photography, nature, journaling, fountain pens, bicycling, coffee life, spirituality and the mystery of it all.
“Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden
Well, not really as we pay for them somehow. Many coffee shops are setup to offer a discount after 10 or 12 purchases. Some even offer free drinks and food. I’ve never had the nerve to calculate how much money I spend just to have a $2.00 discount or free coffee. And, I probably won’t! 🙂
It has quietly snowed all day. Snow began early this morning about 7:00 am. Beautiful big flakes mixed with some rain. The rooftops and grass are white as this storm brings some much needed moisture. The temperature has stayed below freezing all day but does not feel cold. Winter is wanting to give us one more snowfall before allowing spring and summer to arrive.
I discovered a new coffeehouse, The Purple Cup. It is close to home, easy walking distance, and my first mocha latte was spot on. It has big comfy lounge chairs and sofas as well as tables and chairs. I’ll have to give it one more quality check before making it a regular hangout.
“Left to its own devices, my mind spends much of its time having conversations with people who aren’t there.”
Anne Lamott
As, Anne Lamott suggests, we can have some strange conversations in our heads. What is troublesome is when we begin to believe these people and conversations exist. They are not reality so it’s important for us to take a few deep breaths and stay present to the moment. Let go of these unreal thoughts.
There are images everywhere as long as we stay present, are looking, are receptive and hopefully have a camera. This was given me at Mugs coffeehouse. Love the early morning shadows and light with artwork from a local artist.
Took the bus to the Transit Center on campus. Grabbed a mocha at the coffee shop in the Behavioral Science Building. When they called out my drink they also called out the name of some young lady who order a carmel latte. Her and I were surprised to see a heart on each of our drinks. Showing us some love.
Children are awesome! We can learn much from them if we take the time to observe and remain teachable. But, that’s for some other post. Anyway, I came across this image while looking for another image. This little gal and her mother were enjoying some together time at a local coffeehouse. Not sure but it seems to me like her very full day is about to hit a wall, sugar and all. Her mom allowed me to take this image just before the crash. Hope you have a great day.
There are four coffee shops, that I’m aware of, on the campus at Colorado State University. There are several off campus catering to the thousands of students pulling all-nighters. One I patronize is located in the Lory Student Center call Sweet Sinsations Cafe. Of course all you will find are students working the coffee shop and students grabbing a cup on their way to class. And it is cold this morning, 22 degrees right now.

I can walk into several coffeehouses and be greeted by my first name. That feels good. 🙂 I also know several of them by name. At some locations I can even have the baristas call out and say, ‘The usual, Monte?” These young people and the coffeehouse can easily become an extended family. We will almost always have some sort of conversation whether started by them or me, asking questions such as, “How was your weekend?” or “What have you planned for the day?” I find it comforting when they let me know I’m a person and not just a customer with money in his wallet.
They are a community. As I sip on my mocha latte I look around the coffeehouse. Every coffeehouse has piped music. Sometimes the music can be enjoyable and sometimes quite annoying or loud. The baristas, as well as the customers, all have a ritual, their own routine. There are all ages of baristas and customers. You’ll find the student working on homework, professors from campus grading papers between classes, business people on the way to the office and retirees like me. You can have a simple cup of coffee or one of the foo-foo drinks. Pastries in the display case, a burrito, a bagel and more. So, I consider myself a regular.
I suspect most coffeehouses have WiFi and most customers have a laptop or smartphone. Some customers are doing research, checking news feeds, Facebook, email while enjoying coffee and down time. And, even with piped music many are plugged in to their own music.
People meet in coffeehouses for coffee and conversation, first dates, last dates, business and planning meetings, read a new book or newspaper. Many coffeehouses have local artists displaying their work. Some have local musicians performing on certain nights. One coffeehouse packs it in with a Poetry Slam they put on once a month.
Each has it’s own ambiance, feel. This ambiance is created by the location, decor, the baristas, the owner, the customers and of course the quality of their product.
This was taken last week when I met a friend at the Linden Street Cafe in Old Town Fort Collins. We were not sitting at this table but loved the light so grabbed my journal and pen to setup this scene. Would have been a sweet place to journal.
It had been a while since I’d been here. The place is under new ownership and has had some new touches added. I liked it.
