“It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little – do what you can.” – Sydney Smith
“Gaze into the fire, into the clouds, and as soon as the inner voices begin to speak..surrender to them. Don’t ask first whether it’s permitted, or would please your teachers or father or some god. You will ruin yourself if you do that.” – Herman Hesse
The inner voice suggested I use the window light for a self-portrait. I listened. It felt good. I think we all need to do that more often.

Loved the light so I moved in close for a shot. After taking the shot I had to ask my grandson what these guys were. The figurine on the left is My Little Pony and the other one is a Pokemon character. Of course, you all knew that, right?
The figurines were not what I saw first but the early morning light and shadows was. Not sure when things sifted and I began to see the light and then look for a subject to go with it. Both light and shadows call to me and I hope I will always listen to those calls.
..If you get an opportunity in photography you have to grab it – they don’t come along that often. When you get the chance of a great picture, you have to identify that quickly and make the most of the situation. Whatever age you are you can do that. Even with luck, you will still have to press the shutter at the right time. You need good reflexes and you need to be fit.
John Giles
As photographers we are always observing how the light falls on our subjects. When I pulled out my camera and took three images it was a mix of interests. The woman’s focus, how the light was hitting her, the billboard, the gate number, all played into the making of this image. There was also a need to hold my camera in my hand and press the shutter to grab the moment.
Woke to a temperature of 16 degrees at 6:00 am. Now up to 20 degrees but awesome to see the sun shining. Have a good Sunday.
I love nature. I love being in nature, listening to it, smelling it, learning from it. Yet, I spend a lot of time venturing the streets of the city with a camera. Light is what gives our images power. The direction and reflection of light will show us the lines and curves of a building. These lines will hopefully direct the viewer to see, and feel, what we felt at the moment of capture or bring forth whatever feelings from their life’s experiences. Now add a bird against the blue sky and everything changes. But it’s still all about the light.
A useful approach to making art: notice the objects you notice.
Art and fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland
A favorite bookstore has an upper level with several lounging type chairs that can literally swallow you. There always seems to be people settled in the chairs with either their laptop or a book. And every once in a while I’ve found people comfortably asleep. Todays trip to the bookstore found this young lady with her laptop and a beam of radiating light coming from the skylights.
It’s late and I should be sleeping. But, I’m processing this image and listening to the rain tapping against my window and hear the rumble of soft thunder off in the distance. A Spring rain is refreshing the earth. I like it.
This image is another one of those subjects I would have walked by a few years ago. I’ve never been interested in playing chess and with all honesty because I didn’t think I was smart enough to understand and win. However, at this time in my life this game board and chess pieces capture my attention, not because I wanted to learn to play it, but because of the play of light on it. I like it. Who knows, maybe my grandchildren can teach me how to play it sometime.
