    Winter Solstice

    The Lovely Maddie and Grandpa

The winter solstice occurs exactly when the axial tilt of a planet’s polar hemisphere is farthest away from the star that it orbits. Earth’s maximum axial tilt to our star, the Sun, during a solstice is 23° 26′. More evidently from high latitudes, a hemisphere’s winter solstice occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun’s daily maximum elevation in the sky is the lowest. Since the winter solstice lasts only a moment in time, other terms are often used for the day on which it occurs, such as midwinter, the longest night or the first day of winter. But, the best event to ever happen on this day was back in 1996 when my youngest granddaughter was born. Happy Birthday Maddie!!

    Strange how that happens

    Waiting

A couple years ago I read a very good book by David deChumin called Within the Frame. The other night while thumbing through the book an image I had taken four years ago came to mind. The image was taken when I was exploring the streets of Alexandria, Virginia on one of my days off. I have no memory of what I thought at the time or what prompted me to take this image. I believe it was her patient waiting. I just composed the scene in the viewfinder and pressed the shutter. Now four years later, something David wrote in his book about telling a story prompted me to revisit it. Strange how that happens.

    Tough Work

    Chaps Girl

A few years ago I did a promo shoot for a new bar/lounge called Chaps. I was asked to shoot images of the girls in their chaps. There were 12 girls and one stretch limousine. Let me tell you that was “pretty” tough work. 🙂

    Jamie

    Jamie

Most of the images I post are landscapes, still life or street scenes. However, portraits are an interest and something I probably should spend more time doing. Technical skills aside, one of the key attributes of a portrait photographer is that they like people, are curious about their subjects and desire to really connect with them. This is true whether the subject is in the studio or discovered on the street.

Anyway, I would like you to meet Jamie. I met Jamie about 3 years ago when she was working as a flight attendant. We got together a couple of times for photo sessions, one of which is here. She use to be a flight attendant and now is a full time  college student. Thanks, Jamie for the opportunity and I wish only the best for you.

    One More of Dianne

    Dianne

The previous image of Dianne and this one are the two keepers I got from 16 images, all taken in about 5 minutes. We had just stepped off the elevator at our hotel when I saw the window light and asked her to let me take some shots. I really try not to infringe on any of my crew members but this was one of those times when I was excited about the light. I also wanted the session to be short as we had just finished eating BBQ and both of us needed quiet time after several hours of noise.

Today is packing day and cleaning up the apartment. Hope to leave in the morning for my drive back to Colorado. Hope everyone has a great week!

    Contemplative Mood

On a cold and snowy day last week I played with some self-portraits using soft window light, then played around in Lightroom and made spaghetti with hot Italian sausage. A productive day? And, yesterday I finished a trip just as it started snowing, yes more of the white stuff, and watched it continued throughout the night leaving 4-6 inches in it’s wake. Along with that the snow came cold temperature, 9 degrees this morning. I didn’t want to get out of bed but there is a ton of stuff to get done before moving.

I dropped off my old car for a tuneup and to get 2 new tires put on before I leave on the 31st. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and 2 days of travel will find me home. While they worked on the car, I walked over to one of my favorite coffee shops in Uptown Westerville where Ashley, one of my favorite baristas, made me a hot chocolate to warm me up. I have had a lot on my mind the past few days. Making lists, making plans, making phone calls, having address changes, getting papers done for my badges at the Denver airport, parking permits, etc.

Hope everyone has a good weekend! Here’s my self-portrait in black and white. If you really want to see a far more interesting subject in black and white, check out Mark Grafs post here. Be sure to enlarge the image and check out those eyes. It rocks!

    A Gray Afternoon

Yesterdays offering was mostly dull gray skies interspersed with teasing moments of warm sunshine. With the still frigid temperatures there was no motivation to venture outside for any extended period of time, and I could hear the voice of reasoning whispered suggestions of making my way to one of the local coffee house. Once inside I found myself willingly being swallowed by a tattered and worn brown leather chair located in one corner. I gently placed my cup of hot chocolate, heaped with whip cream, on the table beside me. It was now reading time so I curled up with my e-book, confirming that life is good on this gray afternoon.

    Melissa

An afternoon shooting session with Melissa. What a wonderful time as a photographer. We talked prior to the session about not setting any expectations and just have fun. She instantly seemed relaxed, even though she denies it. I liked how she would move to one pose, listen to me shoot a couple of images then move right into another pose. Anyway here are some images from the session. It’s hard to believe she has two grandchildren: a one year old and a two year old. She is a beautiful woman and a beautiful grandma!
