    Open Space

    Open Space

This past week, on a whim, I drove up to the Abby of St. Walburga, located at Virginia Dale, Colorado. The Abbey is a small community of Benedictine contemplative nuns,a place of prayer. Now this is a place of quiet. The monastic life they live is based on a praying the Divine Office. There have been periods in my life where the only prayer I said was “Oh God!” So, I commend those who devote their lives to prayer, meditation and contemplation, no matter what faith. And, as I’ve aged prayer, meditation and contemplation are playing a larger part in my life.

To get the Abby you almost have to drive to Wyoming. As you notice in the above image there are not many trees up there due to the rocky soil and the wind. So, if your’e not careful, your hat will end up in South Platte, Nebraska. For me it is a beautiful drive along Highway 287. The wind blown rock formations. The antelope and soaring hawks and clumps of trees scattered here and there caused me to wander all over the road. Sometimes I think photographers should not be driving. So I had to stop and take a few images and left my hat in the car. The image below is taken near the main door of the convent and shows the surrounding hills and a bronze statue.

    Starting a Trip

    Yours Truly

My grandkids are beginning to have some doubts about their grandfathers stability when they see me setup the tripod and take a few self-portraits. They deny it but I can see it in their eyes. No matter, I think a self-portrait is the best thing to do when you’ve just trimmed the beard for my trip I start today. Gonna fly up north to Wisconsin then to DC on the east coast and crawl into bed late in Kansas City. Then up before dawn and head back to DC. Turn the plane around and fly to Omaha for the night and take off my shoes. The last day is back to Denver where we pickup another plane and fly to Dallas then back to Denver. Done at that point so I drive home and sleep in my own bed on Sunday. Four days off and do it again. It’s a lifestyle. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

    Prairie Fleabane

    Prairie Fleabane

Looking these up on the internet I think these are small Erigeron strigosus (Prairie Fleebane) daisies found on my walk at the Arapahoe Bend Nature area. They were in clumps of 10-12 scattered randomly in the sun and the shade. Whatever they are they sure made my walk enjoyable.

    Places of Quiet

    Prayer Time

With three other people living in my small condo, privacy is scarce. After living alone for the past12 years it has taken a toll on me. So, I’ve wandered off seeking places for quiet and solitude. These have been parks, nature areas, a couple of “quiet” coffee shops and local churches. I’ve discovered I’m not the only one seeking places of quiet and a refuge from the business of the world.

    An Awesome Week

    A Cool Drink

It is a wonderful morning. A light cloud cover is keeping it just cool enough for me. Already have a walk in with a stop off at a coffee shop. Yet, warm enough to work up a sweat. My mind is still blank on things to write about and I do not want to be one who tells you what I ate for breakfast. Instead I’ll post and image of what I drank over the weekend. Hope everyone has an awesome week.

    Same Sunset, but Different

Sunset at Arapahoe Bend Nature Area

This is almost the same image as the one I posted a few days ago, but different, and to me, much more realistic of what I saw. The difference is one is an HDR composite of five images while this one is a composite of three images (All one stop differences). In all honesty I was not comfortable posting the previous image because it was not what I saw and that halo around the sun was awful. Yet, I worked on that HDR image as if there was something I was destined to pull out of it. Never happened. I am much more pleased with this one. So, I’m still learning about the positive and negative aspects of HDR. It intrigues me so I will see what creativity can come from it.

Here is a single image from the set of five images. This image is one stop underexposed then worked in Lightroom 4. Adjustments include temperature, exposure, highlights, blacks and tone curve. The three stop HDR does give me a truer image for color of what I saw. Hope everyone has a good weekend.
